Wrigglers (20 mths – 3 yrs)

The Fundamental reward/Award is centered on 16 different themes with songs, colours and counting to support movement skills.  This early years movement program is split into 2 areas parent & child and independent. It has been designed and developed by British Gymnastics along side early years specialists to aid toddlers – 3 years to acquire essential physical, emotional and social life skills.

The program has six learning goals

  • Physical
  • Social
  • Linguistic
  • Intellectual
  • Creative
  • Educational

Each week of term has a focus on one of the following 10 areas: Warm up, balance, loco motor, educational, action rhyme, coordination, rolling, rebound, large apparatus, cool down)

On successful participation of the required number of weeks and activities covered, parents will be given the opportunity to purchase the themed badge & certificate that accompanies the award.

During each term the children work towards the above award scheme.  This award scheme helps to develop basic movement skills that play an essential role in everyday life, as well as underpinning future developments in sports skills.

A selection of 40 movement activities from the scheme assist in the development of fundamental movement relevant to gymnastics, such as running, jumping, landing, hanging, support on hands, swinging, upside down, rotation, throwing and catching etc.

Every activity has been designated to one of 3 fundamental building blocks that establish the (Action, Balance, Co-ordination) of gymnastics.

  • Action (12 skills): – These are natural movements using large muscle groups, general locomotion and have a pulse raising effect.
  • Balance (12 skills): – Include activities where static or dynamic balance is essential for successful completion of the activity.
  • Co-ordination (16 skills): – Involves basic gymnastics related activities that provide a wide basis for future skill development.

Each of the activities categories has a range of developments and variations within them.  These are intended to give some indication to the breadth of experience and challenges necessary to provide rounded development, and the breadth of experience and challenges necessary to provide rounded development.

8 Levels of achievement starting at level 8 up to level 1 The British Gymnastics Core Proficiency Awards provides further development with gymnastic skills. Both coaches and Educational Professionals of British Gymnastics have developed these awards and the Association also endorses it for Physical Education, underpinning the teaching of Gymnastics within the National Curriculum.

What are the benefits?

  • The award scheme offers progressive programs with several different types of activity and levels of attainment.
  • Provides a sound framework for the progressive development of core gymnastics skills such as strength, flexibility and coordination.
  • Promotes a healthy and active lifestyle and forms a basis for physical literacy development and provides skills and movement actions necessary for other land based sports.
  • Provides gymnasts with motivation, encouragement and reward for skills gained.

How are the Awards tested?

All children are required to obtain 6 out of 10 skills although the 1st skill on each badge level is based on cardio/pulse raising activity is compulsory.  The British Gymnastics Association sets out testing guidelines and skills need to be accomplished competently before moving onto the next level.  Once the child has achieved the required number of skills you will be notified and a badge & certificate that accompanies each level will be available for purchase.

These are the clubs own awards and have been designed to work along side the British Gymnastics Award Scheme.  They act as a preparation/stepping stone for your child’s next British Gymnastics Core Proficiency Award.

How are the Awards tested? 

The children need to obtain a set number skills for each level, and as per the British Gymnastics badge testing criteria.  The skills are from 5 different areas:

  • Cardio / Pulse raising
  • Skills ( eg. Forward roll)
  • Strength / Flexibility / Conditioning
  • Skill on a large piece of Apparatus ( e.g. bar/vault/ bench beam)
  • Set Sequence of skills for each level

The order of the awards is as follows and skills increase in difficulty in each of the 5 areas.

  • RED
  • BLUE
  • YELLOW
  • GREEN
  • PINK
  • PURPLE
  • ORANGE

There is no charge for these awards. Once your child has gained the required number of skills for the level they are working, the award will be presented towards the end of the term.
